Drivers are being told to avoid the M40

MOTORISTS are being urged to avoid the southbound carriageway of the M40 after a major collision this afternoon.

Three cars were involved in a collision shortly before 2pm between junctions 2, Beaconsfield, and 1A, which links to the M25.

All three lanes of traffic are stationary from junction 2, which has been shut off by police and delays are reported on the northbound carriageway.

A male in his 40s was airlifted to John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford after being trapped for 45 minutes, said Marc Lister, spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service.

He said paramedics worked "furiously" to stabalise the man, who had suffered a head injury.

A woman in her 40s was taken by ambulance to Wexham Park Hospital, Slough with a head injury.

A male in another car was treated at the scene for minor, injuries, he said.

The three were alone in the vehicles, he said, and three ambulances and a rapid respond car were dispatched to the scene.

Drivers are being told to avoid the M40

Mr Lister said: "A passing-by doctor stopped to help and scene and provided a great deal of assistance."

Drivers have been asked to avoid the southbound stretch, and Buckinghamshire County Council says all drivers heading south on the M40 should leave the motorway and find an alternative route.

James Wright, press officer for the Highways Agency, added: "We have set variable message signs all the way down the carriageway to let people know, to encourage them to plot an alternative route."

Police are now escorting traffic from the carriageway.
