Bowling Alley shut at Eden after fire
EDEN'S bowling alley is shut until further notice after a fuseboard feeding into it caught fire today, causing a temporary evacuation.
The upstairs area of the shopping centre including the alley, cinema, restaurant and some other shops had to be closed off for around three hours from 3.30pm.
Fire crews from High Wycombe attended after smoke was seen coming from an electrical store room.
Firefighters had to force entry to get into the room. The fire was small but it caused large amounts of smoke and the surrounding parts of the building were evacuated as a precaution.
Watch manager Maloney, from High Wycombe Fire station, led a team carrying out a re-inspection at 7.30pm this evening.
He said: "It seems to be fine now, no cause for alarm.
"We let the security guards know to keep an eye on it but I'm a hundred per cent now that it's safe and has all cooled down."
An investigation will take place to uncover what caused the fire but it is thought the fuseboard probably over heated.
An investigation will take place to uncover what caused the fire but it is thought the fuseboard probably over heated.
But this is a new shopping centre supposedly built to modern standards! How many more overloaded fuse boxes are there in the complex just waiting to catch fire?
Surely they should shut the whole complex until electrical checks for any more overloaded circuits are done?

I was there yesterday and one of the members of staff told me that power cuts happened regularly due to overload!

How on earth (excuse the pun) does a member of staff know that the powercuts are due to overload. Have they performed tests on the circuits to determine this? I don't think so. Having said that, it looks as though no-one has performed a thorough electrical test, which does beg the question how did the centre pass building control in the first place?

My daughter was there with a party of school friends yesterday...totally ruined the birthday party. I wonder if they'll be bothered to send an apology?
I expect not!

This sounds very dangerous to me, cables get hot due to carrying too many amps. Fuses or circuit breakers should trip, and protect the cables from overheating. It would seem to me, that the fuses in question are not working, or at least in this case, did not work.
Saying it's safe now that it's all cooled down is just not good enough. What about next time?

Hello their, I work for AMF Bowling. None of the staff told any customer we had power-cuts, the Center is safe and it was just a accident. It has nothing to do with AMF Bowling. if you have any problems then contact the Eden because it was their side of the electrics.
Stop moaning! get a life
Center is safe and it was just a accident.
I would hardly describe an electrical fire as an accident. Properly installed electrical systems do not overheat as surely the total loading should be worked out in advance to ensure overheating does not take place.
If the centre is so safe how come it caught fire yesterday? Are we being taken for fools?
The public will take a lot of convincing before they return as they don’t want to be caught out next time the whole lot goes up in smoke....

The power was out for a full 15 minutes before the staff thought to get everyone out!
Thank goodness there wasn't a real blaze going...

it was not 15 minutes! Eden did not notify us that it was a electrical fire, so all the stsff thought that it was just a powercut, in which case we tryed to fix the problem.
Firefighters had to force entry to get into the room.
Why was there not a member of staff on hand with a master key?
Fire crews from High Wycombe attended after smoke was seen coming from an electrical store room.
So the smoke was “seen” coming from the electrical store room. Why did the fire alarms not go off? Surely it should be common practice to have a fire alarm detector placed in situations where fire is likely to break out (i.e. close to the fuse boards). The news article and all of the readers who so far have left comments have failed to mention anything about the automatic fire alarms going off and detecting the fire first. Do the fire alarms actually work?

At the end of the day it was a small fire - no one was hurt - FFS it could have been a lot worse and it wasn't!

Why did it not go off?Maybe it is connected to the fountain. The AMF guy is being very defensive. WHY? I have not read anywhere in here where anybody blamed AMF or the bowling center. Also AMF guy, I think you should go back to grammer school. Are you part of Management or just a mechanic weenie that fixes the machinery when it breaks down? I would think that someone in Management would have better PR and grammer.

How many power cuts have you had now since Eden opened. It doesn't sound like this was the first time you expewrienced this. And then you say "we tryed to fix the problem." What problem? You said AMF did not have a problem. Is this why we are only hearing about the bowling center being closed and none of the other outlets are affected. HMMM, time to call in Sherlock.

oh dear,
It seems to me that everybody is getting in right state about all this. I personally was there on the day in question and I dont think that there was anything that ANYBODY could have done to avoid what happened. I also feel that if you really think about it I dont think that any of the above companies would willingly shut the doors on their business's (esp on a bank holiday weekend!) And as for the AMF rep, what did they ever do to you guys, they were just trying assure the public that as far as the bowling center was concerned they were unaware of the fire at the time of it happening but once they did everybody was evacuated. I just found it extremley funny reading the comments, you sound like a bunch of school children "oh well he said, then she said!" I personally think the bowling alley and its surrounding business's have been a huge asset to wycombe, its given everybody a place to go (well thats what i am asuming seeing as you all kicked up such a fuss when it shut??) The staff are friendly and helpful, the atmosphere is fun, i think the bowling is great. I am assuming now that its all re-opened you will all be hot footing down there to get bowling??!!!
you have spent enough time whinging its closed????
