A MOSQUE leader says members of the Muslim community in High Wycombe are "relieved" that British teacher Gillian Gibbons has been released from a Sudanese jail.

The 54-year-old teacher was sent to prison last week for allowing children in her class to call a teddy bear Muhammad, the name of Islam's Prophet, but was pardoned by Sudan's president this morning.

Zafar Iqbal, chairman of the Jubilee Road Mosque in High Wycombe, said: "There was a lot of anger among the whole community, Muslims and non-Muslims.

"The whole scenario wasn't understood properly. It was a genuine mistake. The main thing is that she has been pardoned, but it is a bit late.

"It was a mistake from both sides. She made a mistake with her lack of knowledge and they took it too seriously without looking at the reality.

"We were so pleased to hear the news. We were under a lot of pressure because we try and bring the community together, we work very hard at it."

The Jubilee Road mosque is holding an open day on Sunday, December 9, to celebrate its 25th birthday. Anyone living in the High Wycombe area is welcome to visit the mosque, where there will be guided tours, displays about calligraphy and the Qur'an and a talk on the role of Jesus and Mary in Islam.

The mosque's Imam, Imam Jeelani, said: "I encourage everybody to take advantage of this opportunity to come and visit us and find out more about Islam. I sincerely hope that this event will in some small way contribute to all our efforts to build friendships and understanding across our community."

The guided tours will run from 12pm until 5pm.

thanks for the invite. I've been to these before and they're really hospitable and kind, and the talks are interesting.

Despite what the main media trys to have us think, stories like this just remind us that all moslems are not fanatics, and they are level headed people who have a faith and want to get on with their neighbours in what ever country they call home. Hope your open day is a success!

The teacher story was pure media hysteria in the first place.
The 1,000 strong "march" calling for her death was paid for by the news channels.
Now the media can milk another Liverpudlian homecoming for a fewe more days. Will we get another "My Life So Far" bio I wonder?

I suggest people spend some time reading about Islam, the origins of the religion and what its beliefs are. It's time people started getting educated about this huge movement themselves so they can make decisions about its place in a modern UK society.

I'd like to go to this, I think it might be interesting to a mosque on the inside. Wonder what time it's starting? Maybe BFP can find out for us and maybe even come along with us and do a story on this open day...

Yes. As long as the name is chosen appropriately.

And that "appropriateness" may change depending on who interprets the Qu'ran. You may be welcomed or you may be beheaded.

Islam now reminds me very much of what Christianity was like in dark ages before it learned to move with the times and stopped interpreting the Bible so literally. Inflexible, out of date and dangerous.

I bought a teddy bear for a tenner. Then I sold it on ebay for twenty. Now I'm getting chased out by Muslims because I made a prophet.

why? what if the majority of people are not really interested. does that make them wrong? there are loads of activities in which people partake which I disagree with but I don't need to understand them - just how to live with them or avoid them.

This is totally different to 'other activities'. This religion is a huge force for change in the UK and is influencing my life, yours and your children's.

Getting at least a smattering of knowledge about such a large and spreading religion is important if you want to see what it is that is influencing the decisions, policies and cultural change in the UK in the next 20 years.

'Avoiding them' is not possible since their numbers are in the millions and muslims are in positions of influence and power throughout the UK. 'Living with them' can only be achieved if you understand where they are coming from - the Qu'ran. Otherwise you will always be looked down upon by them as inferior and an obstruction to a wholly Islamic world.

'Not being interested' is just putting your head in the sand.
