BOY racers who meet up in public places to show off their motors and listen to banging tunes could face losing their pride and joy.

Groups of between 60 and 100 vehicles have been gathering at Wycombe Marsh Retail Park, in London Road, and in Hillbottom Road.

Thames Valley Police say they have received dozens of complaints about noise, intimidation, dangerous driving, criminal damage and anti-social behaviour caused by "cruisers" meeting up in the evening.

Cruisers are people who get together to show off their cars and socialise in public roads and on private land.

Sergeant Mike Hamlin, from Wycombe Public Safety Team, said: "We've had dozens of complaints recently and are very concerned about the anti-social behaviour and the danger to the public associated with these events.

"The gatherings also seem to be getting bigger as it is getting warmer.

"For the past few weeks between 60 and 100 vehicles have been meeting at Wycombe Marsh Retail Park and Hillbottom Road.

"Thames Valley Police has now begun Operation Guzzler, a weekly operation supported by Wycombe District Council that forms part of the Safer Streets initiative, to tackle the problem, and we will continue to police the events robustly."

Letters have been sent out to registered owners of vehicles seen at these meetings warning them that vehicles driven in an anti-social manner could be seized by police.

Sgt Hamlin said: "We have nothing against people getting together to socialise and show off their cars, as long as it's done in a way that does not cause nuisance or distress to others."

Anyone who witnesses people driving their vehicle in an anti-social manner can contact High Wycombe police station on 08458 505 505 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
